“Those are the guys that put me on the field when I didn’t think I had a chance to be on the field. These are professionals, and God put them in my life for a reason.”, Terrell Owens, NFL wide receiver in reference to his chiropractor.

So what is chiropractic?  By definition, chiropractic is a philosophy, science, and art of things natural. It is a system of adjusting the articulations of the spinal column, by hand only, for the correction of the cause of dis-ease.  A chiropractor’s main duty is to align the spinal column so that the nervous system can function properly, thus allowing every system of the body to function closer to 100%.

Today’s sports world is so competitive that the difference between winning and losing can come down to inches or seconds.  This is one reason that athletes of all levels are looking for any competitive edge they can get and many are turning to chiropractic medicine as a form of performance enhancement.

Many people do not realize that one of the main functions of the first vertebrate in the neck, the atlas, functions as a stabilizer for the head which weighs between eight and twelve pounds. If the atlas gets out of place, every bone in the body gets stressed and this stress is multiplied hundreds of times if this person takes part in strenuous sports or exercise. The spine shifts in order to support the weight of the head.  This means that if your neck is not aligned properly, you could risk hurting another body parts such as your knees or back.  Severe back pain or knee injury can mean the end of an athletic career.   If the spine is misaligned for a period of time, the chance of injury increases.  Today’s athletes are using chiropractic care to prevent injury and stay on the field.

Nearly all pro sports teams now have chiropractors on staff to help their highly paid athletes perform better and to prevent injury.  Chiropractors also help athletes get back on the field more quickly after injury has occurred.  The chiropractor for athletes in most cases, first aligns the spine properly. The athlete is then given core and strengthening exercises to help stabilize the spine and to prevent injury. Chiropractors for high level athletes are often taken on team trips in order to keep performance at the highest level.
