With so many types and brands of mattresses on the market, how do you know “which mattress is best for me?”
In my Mesa, AZ chiropractic office our patients fill out a health questionnaire that has a question regarding the age of your mattress and whether or not it is comfortable. Our three chiropractic doctors also ask about the way you sleep; on your back, side or stomach. A good night’s rest is very important, not only for energy and mental alertness but for the well being of your spine. As chiropractic doctors, we constantly see patients for low back pain, neck stiffness and other related ailments that are often due to poor sleep and a bad mattress.
Do you know if you are even in need of a new mattress? If you don’t know you should ask yourself these questions:
Is my mattress over 10 years old? If it was an inexpensive one to begin with: is it over 5 years old?
Do I awake with low back pain and/or stiffness, neck and or shoulder pain and/or stiffness?
Do I toss and turn frequently during the night?
Does my mattress sag where I sleep; even when recently rotated?
Does your chiropractic doctor recommend a new mattress?
The Journal of Chiropractic Medicine in 2006 reported that sleeping on a new mattress can significantly reduce stiffness and back pain. It was found that participants in this study reported immediate and sustained benefits after sleeping on a new mattress. It did not matter what type but it had to be new. Those participants who had back pain complaints prior to the research study reportedly had a 63 percent improvement in back discomfort with a new mattress.
When it is time to buy a new mattress you must ask yourself “which mattress is best for me?” There are many pros and cons for every mattress and there are equally many who have “opinions” as to which is better for you. For the sake of simplicity, I will list five types in order of preference based upon my professional opinion.
Latex – Habitat furnishings tops the list. Their product is from natural latex, is very hypo allergenic, durable and priced reasonably. Go to their website for more information.
Memory foam – Comfort Dreams gets my nod but you need to be sure this is the one you want! They do not have a website that I could find and you will most likely have to buy it through Overstock.com. There will be no refund by Overstock.com if requested. With that said, the price is very good as is the overall customer satisfaction.
Air – Comfortaire is what you want here. However, it does however have a loud air pump that can be annoying.
Innerspring – Springwall has a series to choose from based upon your firmness preference.
Water – Typically the motionless are better.
“Which Mattress is Best for Me?” Only you can truly be the judge of that. When doing your research ask your chiropractic doctor what he recommends for your spine; do you what or need firmness or some give? Try to purchase a product that has a 90 day or better return policy. This way, you can return it if you are not feeling or sleeping better. Good luck shopping!
