Fighting Obesity

I am going to discuss a subject that is both uncomfortable and important to me as a chiropractic physician: obesity. You see, this is one of those topics that I personally struggle with but as a chiropractor I know it is critically important to your health and mine.

In my Mesa AZ chiropractic clinic, I serve many people with weight problems that contribute to such illnesses as back pain, digestive disorders, fatigue and nutritional deficiencies. However, knowing that obesity is not good for you and overcoming it are two very different things. As a chiropractor who knows the challenge of dieting, exercising with sore joints, weight loss and weight gain personally, I can relate to the  chiropractic patient and his/her heartache. But obesity must never be succumbed to! The battle may be life long but it must be fought at every corner of the mind and heart.

As a Mesa AZ chiropractor, clinical nutritionist and class instructor, I teach nutrition, health and wellness to chiropractic patients and non chiropractic students of all ages, races and gender. Obesity knows no boundaries!

According to the American Obesity Awareness Web site http://www.obesity.org/information/factsheets.asp obesity has been linked to cancer. I quote from the site “Each year, obesity causes at least 112,000 excess deaths in the US.² A study published in the August 24, 2006 New England Journal of Medicine showed increase risk of death among both men and women who were overweight but not obese. Obesity has been associated with numerous, adverse health effects. They include: type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, hypertension, gallstones, fatty liver disease, sleep apnea, GERD, stress incontinence, heart failure, degenerative joint disease, birth defects, miscarriages, asthma, cancers in men (esophageal, colorectal, liver, pancreatic, lung, prostate, kidney, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, multiple myeloma and leukemia), and cancers in women (breast, colorectal, gallbladder, pancreatic, lung, uterine, cervical, ovarian, kidney, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma).”

Obesity is no laughing matter. Despite the outward joviality of many obese people (including this chiropractic doctor) being over weight hurts; physically, mentally, spiritually and emotionally.

If you struggle with your weight, do not give up fighting for improved health and well being. Join me (at my Mesa AZ chiropractic clinic, or not) in accepting the challenge to Live, Love and Learn. Together we can live better lives, love who we are, others and all of our Creator’s precious gifts and learn how to conquer our “weight problem”.
