  • Fibromyalgia & Vitamin D – Am I at Risk?

  • I live in Arizona. My chiropractic and wellness clinic is in Mesa Arizona. I shop, play, worship, work, relax and (usually) vacation in Arizona. So why would I, or anyone living in sunny Arizona, need Vitamin D?

For many years I have been telling my patients who have come to my Mesa, Arizona clinic for various health and chiropractic reasons, that the need for Vitamin D was more than likely not necessary. After all, living in beautiful and sunny Arizona provides the body with plenty of Vitamin D, right? Possibly, but maybe not.

As many of you know, for many years now I have been treating patients with Fibromyalgia Syndrome. I recently created a Facebook Page called East Valley Fibromyalgia Support to support and address the needs of fibromyalgia sufferers locally and any where throughout the world. Fibromyalgia is a very serious and debilitating condition for many – and the causes for this illness are many. Over the past several years I have dedicated more time and study to the treatment and control of fibromyalgia. Perhaps this is one reason my Mesa, Arizona chiropractic clinic has become an important part of wellness for many fibromyalgia sufferers throughout the State of Arizona and especially here in the East Valley. The need to continually research safe and reliable alternatives to drug therapy is necessary. Then and if drugs are deemed necessary, the fibromyalgia patient can rest assured that everything possible is being done to improve the quality of life for him or her.

The title of this article is “Fibromyalgia & Vitamin D – Am I at Risk?” It is strongly believed that a link between Vitamin D deficiency and fibromyalgia has been established in some, if not many, fibromyalgia sufferers.

I have known since chiropractic school days that in some regions of the world the need to supplement with Vitamin D was necessary due to the lack of sunlight. This is especially true if you have fibromyalgia.

Back East and up North, winter conditions block the sun’s ability to provide ultraviolet radiation to the skin thus restricting the ability of the body to innately produce adequate amounts of Vitamin D. When a person is properly and regularly exposed to the sun’s radiation Vitamin D production is activated.

But is vitamin D supplementation really necessary in Arizona? It very well may be; especially for the fibromyalgia sufferer.

Fibromyalgia is a painful and fatiguing condition that often keeps its “victims” locked up; figuratively and literally. Most fibromyalgia patients seldom leave their home environment for more than just a few minutes. In Arizona, houses are often construction with windows equipped to block the Sun’s heat producing, ultraviolet rays and window drapes and blinds are common too. When exposed to any sunlight for a longer period of time, sunscreen is often used. Cars have tinted windows, people wear hats and an indoor mall or movie theater is preferred over a hot, sweaty stroll in the park!

Fibromyalgia patients especially are vulnerable to avoiding the sun. It will often trigger massive headaches and it often adds to the fatigue already present. So the depletion of Vitamin D can and will occur; even in sunny Arizona.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. This means that you body stores it within fat cells. When you deplete your Vitamin D levels, your body must both store and use what little you may get through your diet; like in Vitamin D fortified milk. Here again, many fibromyalgia patients will minimize milk products in their diet due to the negative effects it has to their digestive system. So where are they getting the adequate amounts of Vitamin D? They’re not unless they are supplementing.

If you have chronic, unexplained muscle stiffness with achiness, numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, chronic fatigue or malaise, depression or melancholy (these sound an awful lot like fibromyalgia symptoms, do they not?) then maybe you are in need of Vitamin D.

Consult your wellness doctor or (if you live in the Mesa, Arizona area) give our wellness clinic a call to determine if you are in need of this very important vitamin.

And one more important thing – when investing in your health be sure to use only the highest quality products or services. Remember that when purchasing vitamins and or minerals, not all products are created equally nor maintain the same quality of standards that Standard Process Labs uses.
