Stopping the Cold and Flu – An Update

The Cold and Flu season is upon us and, for those who suffer from fibromyalgia; this is a common time for deep fibromyalgia pain. But you may not have to endure such terrible fibromyalgia pain if you can avoid catching a Cold or the Flu.

I recently wrote about three simple things you can do to help fight off the cold and flu this season.  As a chiropractic physician, I wanted to add another list of three things that you can do to stop the cold and flu dead in its tracks. Here they are:

1)     Eat more protein! According to an article found in CNN Health “Your nutrition profoundly affects your ability to fight these diseases,” notes Katherine Tallmadge, national spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association. That means fill up your plate with lean protein, including chicken, fish and fat-free dairy products. Why protein? “The molecules that fight disease are made of protein,” Tallmadge says. (Protein is essential for the fibromyalgia patient too!)

2)     Drink a little more water! Stay hydrated with pure water and use water as your main beverage  as much as possible. Minimize the use milk, coffee, tea and/or sodas. When you start to become dehydrated the amount of blood available to circulate around your body decreases. This reduces the ability of the gut to absorb immune enhancing nutrients. Cells, including the immune enhancing cells, will function more appropriately and the lymphatic system removes waste better when properly hydrated.

3)     Go see your chiropractor! Your nervous system is the master communicator within your body. How on earth can your body’s defensive mechanisms work without proper communication? It can’t! Spinal care is essential to a strong immune system. Don’t believe me? Ask anyone with spinal degeneration how often they get sick, have headaches, experience fibromyalgia flare-ups, etc. Go see your chiropractor!

Water – It is Good for You!

Helpful Hint – Drink More Water! There is not set rule to follow because there are too many variables at play here. But, as a general rule of thought, a minimum of 64 to 128 ounces a day may be needed. Are you very active, do you sweat easily, are you of a larger body weight? Here is a cool water calculator that may be helpful.

Water is a nutrient that everyone is familiar with; including me. Yet, even though I am constantly reminding others of the importance of its frequent daily use, I find myself not drinking enough of it.

I recall many years ago at a National Scout Jamboree finding myself suddenly and embarrassingly going to a hospital due to dehydration. My symptoms were very subtle but the doctors I was working with became alarmed at my red face. So, off I went. There, I was hooked up to an IV and told to rest through the night. The following morning I awoke more alert and energetic than ever before; because I was thoroughly hydrated.

Water is absolutely essential to recovery; any recovery. Make it a goal today and this week, to drink the amount of water recommended for your age, body size, gender and activity level.

Water: Essential to Living! Are you drinking enough?

I live in a desert. Seven months of the year it is considered very warm to hot. Yet despite the obvious need for water I find many in my Mesa AZ chiropractic clinic living in a state of dehydration. Dehydration is defined as the excessive loss of bodily fluid. When your body’s need for fluid is compromised it must protect itself through defensive, compromising means. For example, as a chiropractor I have seen and you may have experienced many of the following symptoms:

  • Joint inflammation
  • Back Problems
  • Headaches
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Allergies
  • Depression
  • Mental Fogginess
  • Asthma
  • Angina

Being a chiropractor does not immune me from falling into the trap of forgetting to drink plenty of water. On more than one occasion I have experienced these symptoms too.

It has been suggested that the Lack of water is the number one cause of daytime fatigue, that 8-10 glasses of water per day could significantly ease back and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers, that One glass of water will control evening hunger pangs for almost 100% of dieters and that a small 2% drop in body water will produce short-term memory loss or confusion, difficulty performing simple math, and difficulty with visual focusing on a computer screen. Other studies (not cited here) have shown that drinking a minimum of five glasses of water daily will decrease the risk of colon cancer by 45%, breast cancer by 79% and bladder cancer by 50%.

If you came into my Mesa AZ chiropractic clinic I may ask you: Are you dehydrated? How do you know? Then I would tell you that if you tend to wait until you have become thirsty to determine the need for more water then you are probably dehydrated. If you find yourself wanting to eat even though you are not really hungry, you are probably dehydrated. If you drink caffeine drinks daily and / or multiple times per day, you are probably dehydrated. If you work outdoors, you are probably dehydrated.

You may believe that the simple answer to this dehydration problem is to drink more water; and you would be partially correct. However, there could be other critical issues at play too. As your Mesa AZ chiropractor I can help you identify other risk factors you may have. But until we meet, please drink more water. Drink at least 64 oz. a day; more if you work outside! And please understand, this is the minimum that you should do! There is more that can and should be done so email me here with your questions, visit our website for the chiropractic services we provide, or you may call or visit me at my Mesa AZ Chiropractic clinic; 480-644-0644.
